Mini Specialists Information

Considered a British icon of the 1960's, the original Mini was built with the vision of being a small economical car. Made by the British Motor Corporation and its successors from 1959 to 2000, its space-saving layout with front-wheel drive enabled some 80% of the cars floorpan to be used for luggage and passenger space – this design influenced a generation of other carmakers. The Mini was likened in popularity to the German Volkswagen Beetle and had large popularity on North America and in 1999 the Mini was voted 2nd most influential car of the 20th century, only beaten by the Ford Model T.

Over the years of production many variants and versions of the mini have been developed to accommodate different markets. The Mini Mark 1 had 3 major update in the UK including the Mark 2, the Mark 3 and the Mini Clubman. Further to these versions, other variations included an estate version, pick-up truck and jeep like buggy called the Mini Moke. Sportier versions were also developed and were marketed as the Mini Cooper and Cooper 'S' ranges. These sportier versions saw great success as rally cars and won the Mote Carlo Rally no fewer than 4 times between 1964 and 1967.

Since its inception over 5,300,000 Minis were produced worldwide with the last of the 'classic mini' rolling off production line on the 4th October 2000. Now owned by BMW, the new mini is technically unrelated to the old Mini, however the front wheel drive, transverse four-cylinder and iconic 'bulldog' stance is still prominent in the new car.

Since the takeover by BMW the mini underwent a huge remodelling with the all new generation of mini. At its launch in 2001, 3 variations were available, the Cooper, Cooper S and the One. Following on from mini's tradition the Cooper and Cooper S still retained their sportier heritage. Mini now has 6 distinctive models in their range including the Mini Hatch/Hardtop, Mini Clubman, Mini Convertible/Cabrio, Mini Countryman, Mini Coupe and the Mini Roadster. A Seventh model is also planned for release in 2013. Debuted as a concept care at the Detroit Auto Show, the Mini Paceman will be the latest production version.
